This regiment was created in 1802 when an experimental corps of riflemen was incorporated into the line as the 95th regiment. At first it comprised only one battalion, but a second was later formed at Canterbury. In 1806 the 1st battalion served in campaigns in South America while the second saw action in the Copenhagen expedition of 1807 later moving on to campaign in Sweden. Both battalions went to the Peninsula and fought at Obidos, Rolica and Vimiers. Whilst the first stayed in Spain, taking part in the retreat to Vigo, the second was sent to serve in the Walcheren expedition. The 1st battalion saw action again in the Peninsula in 1809 as part of Cranford's famous Light division, and was joined once more by the 2nd Battalion in the following year. At the end of the campaign in Spain both battalions went to Holland and in 1815 served at Waterloo, and subsequently took part in the allied occupation of Paris. |
