These are the elite of the Medieval soldiers and although they were often mounted as cavalry, they fought in melee as well. Knights were often wealthy lords, or relatives of lords, who trained for years to be excellent fighters. If they were captured in battle they were often spared from torture and kept in reasonable comfort and later ransomed back to their families or Kings. Other prisoners were not so lucky.

An English Billman (similiar to a pikeman), who uses that fierce weapon to kill mounted troops and combat infantry.

The English Archer, an extremely important soldier as they could kill from a distance and could slay a knight before he even began to enter combat (knights thought this was 'unfair' and cowardly.)

Crossbowmen played an important role in the late Medieval period. The crossbow was really the first hand-held weapon that could be used by an untrained soldier to injure or kill a knight in plate armour. The most powerful crossbows could penetrate armour and kill at 200 yards. Crossbows are easier to aim than longbows because the crossbowman doesn't have to use a hand to hold the string back while aiming. On a similar note, a crossbow can be loaded long before the bowman might need to shoot. In this way, the bowman would be able to shoot immediately if surprised. Crossbows require less upper body strength to operate as well. One can use both arms to span (draw back) a crossbow.

Sergeant (sergeaunte): This title is not the same as modern versions of non-commissioned officers, but refers to common soldiers who serve a Lord or Knight.

Men-at-arms: Not every man in the army was a knight or archer. Many were skilled Yeomen, though not rich enough to be knights, these were the deadly men-at-arms. They sometimes were mounted but often acted as Infantry.
